7th & 8th December 2009: Llanhellith Miners Institute, South Wales
In association with the Digital Communications Knowledge Transfer Centre, the Institute of Advanced Broadcasting held a two day Sandpit.
Along with Gary Thompson, the Director of the Institute were industry professionals, entrepreneurs and academics from the University of Wales, Newport. The Sandpit started with a presentation and introduction by its Chairman Simon Gibson also Chief Executive of Wesley Clover. Mr Gibson explained the purpose of the Sandpit was to map out project ideas to take forward in the Blaenau Gwent region.
As a result of the Sandpit the IAB will now be taking forward two project themes:
Digital Convergence Platforms
• Broadcasting business models
• Digital inclusion models
• New monetisation models
• Universal service obligation models
• New content models
SMART Home - Defining the Digital Home of the Future
• SMART Grid
• SMART Meters
• SMART Technology
• SMART Energy
Participant Feedback
“The Sandpit workshops provided an innovative way of exploring, brainstorming and developing ideas for new projects such as the Institute of Advanced Broadcasting. The classic methods of using lego bricks and tennis balls broke the ice among the group, while the more serious task of drawing out ideas on charts and using key words through the wireless keypads was an innovative way of pulling the best ideas from people. As a local entrepreneur, I would certainly look to use something similar in future as our company grows.”

“We found the sandpit a really valuable experience and very much enjoyed it. It was amazing how much progress was made and how much was achieved over the two days. It was fascinating how the format of the sandpit concentrated everyone’s thoughts and produced such interesting and constructive outputs. There was also a very good blend of people there – a great match of various skills and experiences that were well harnessed by the sandpit’s structure and process.”
